Read: Ephesians 4:11-16
Jesus increased in wisdom and stature. --- Luke 2:52
The Bible In One Year:
Isaiah 11-13
Ephesians 4
"Can you measure me today?" Caleb, our paperboy, asked.
It was not the first time he had made that request. A few years ago I had mentioned to him how tall he was getting. Since then, we've often measured his height on the siding of our house. After all this time, he still wants me to measure him.
Measurements can be indicators of growth. And it's a good idea to measure our spiritual growth. For instance: Do I spend time reading God's Word and talking with Him each day? Do I look forward to fellowshiping with the Lord? What "fruit of the Spirit" is apparent in my life? Do I talk about Jesus with people who don't know Him? How am I using my spiritual gift or gifts? Do I have a generous and giving spirit? How much better do I know God today than I did a year ago? These questions are good indicators of spiritual growth.
A child seems to grow up all of a sudden, but it's actually a continual process. Just as Jesus grew in both wisdom and stature, we as believers are to continue to "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ" [2 Peter 3:18]. We are no longer to be children, but to "grow up in all things into Him who is the head --- Christ" [Eph. 4:14-15]. Have you measured yourself lately? --- Cindy Hess Kasper
The child of God who reads the Word
And heeds the messages he's heard
Will grow in grace from day to day
And share with others on life's way. --- Hess
SALVATION IS THE MIRACLE OF A MOMENT; GROWTH IS THE LABOR OF A LIFETIME.

From Here To Eternity
Read: 1 Thess. 4:13-18
We shall always be with the Lord. --- 1 Thessalonians 4:17
The Bible In One Year:
Isaiah 9-10
Ephesians 3
According to a report in the New England Journal of Medicine, if one 45-year-old man exercises regularly through the rest of his life and another guy the same age exists as a couch potato, the exercising man will live only 10 months longer.
It's good to take good care of our bodies and it makes sense to exercise if we're able, but this idea of extending your life for a mere 10 months looks pretty futile when you compare it with "the ultimate life-extension plan." According to the Bible, you can extend your life from here to eternity.
Look at what the apostle Paul told the people at Thessalonica. Trying to encourage them about Jesus' return, he wrote, "We who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord" [1 Thess. 4:17]. Astounding! Those who make that quick exit will never die. And even if Jesus does not return while you are alive, if you know Him as Savior you will never die spiritually. You have "everlasting life."
Are you interested in extending your life? Go ahead and exercise. But don't forget that the ultimate life-extension plan is salvation through Jesus --- your guarantee of living forever. --- Dave Branon
When Jesus took our punishment
God's wrath was satisfied;
Now we can live at peace with Him
Because our Savior died. --- Sper

Hadrian's Wall
Read: Ephesians 2:11-18
[Christ] has broken down the middle wall of separation. --- Ephesians 2:14
The Bible In One Year:
Isaiah 7-8
Ephesians 2
When Julius Caesar invaded the south east coast of Britain in 55 BC, he met resistance from warring Celtic tribes. But a century later, Roman control had extended all the way north into what is now Scotland.
The conquest took 30,000 Celtic lives, but the Roman victory was short-lived. Surviving clansmen soon began a fierce guerilla campaign against their occupiers. So in AD 122, Emperor Hadrian ordered a wall constructed to separate the Romans from the barbarians to the north. Hadrian's Wall stands to this day.
In Jesus' day, a barrier stronger than Hadrian's Wall stood between God's people and the Gentiles who were outside their spiritual community. It was the barrier of ethnic prejudice. God's design was to bless all the families of the earth through Abraham [Gen. 12:1-3; Isa. 51:2]. But instead of being a witness to the nations, Israel nurtured prejudice against the Gentiles.
Prejudice and racism remain with us today, even in the church. Such attitudes do damage to our witness of Christ's love for all people. Jesus laid down His life to redeem people from every tribe and nation. We must not only accept them, we must love them as our brothers and sisters in Christ [Gal. 3:28-29; Rev. 5:9]. --- Dennis Fisher

The Power Of Sin
Read: Romans 7:14-25
Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us. --- Hebrews 12:1
The Bible In One Year:
Isaiah 5-6
Ephesians 1
I was having lunch with a pastor-friend when the discussion sadly turned to a mutual friend in ministry who had failed morally. As we grieved together over this fallen comrade, now out of ministry, I wondered aloud, "I know anyone cna be tempted and anyone can stumble, but he's a smart guy. How could he think he could get away with it?" Without blinking, my friend responded, "Sin makes us stupid." It was an abrupt statement intended to get my attention, and it worked.
I have often thought of that statement in the ensuing years, and I continue to affirm the wisdom of those words. How else can you explain the actions of King David, the man after God's own heart turned adulterer and murderer? Or the reckless choices of Samson? Or the public denials of Christ by Peter, the most public of Jesus' disciples? We are flawed people who are vulnerable to temptation and to the foolishness of mind that can rationalize and justify almost any course of action if we try hard enough.
If we are to have a measure of victory over the power of sin, it will come only as we lean on the strength and wisdom of Christ [Rom. 7:24-25]. As His grade strengthens our hearts and minds, we can overcome our own worst inclination to make foolish choices. --- Bill Crowder
The price of sin is very high
Though now it may seem low;
And if we let it go unchecked,
Its crippling power will grow. --- Fitzhugh

Fearing The Worst
Read: Galatians 6:2-10
Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. --- Galatians 6:2
The Bible In One Year:
Isaiah 3-4
Galatians 6
When I learned I needed chemotherapy, my biggest fear was losing my hair. I knew this was a vain thought and should have been a minor concern, but I rationalized that it was okay to grieve what the Bible calls a woman's glory [1 Cor. 11:15].
I knew, however, that the loss I was grieving was not my glory but my identity. My hair, which reached to my knees, was so much a part of who I was that I was afraid of losing myself when I lost it. In the past I'd had nightmares about having my hair cut. What would happen when it was really gone? I feared the worst.
But the worst never happened. I had my hair cut short --- a little anxiety but no nightmares. And then it fell out --- some sadness, but no despondency.
Several weeks later my dear friend Marge said to me, "Julie, I can't tell you how often I have grieved the loss of your hair. It's so much a part of you."
Suddenly I realized that Marge was fulfilling the command of Galatians 6:2, "Bear one another's burdens." She was coming alongside me with prayers and empathy to ease my burden.
Satan wants to defeat us with heavy burdens, but fellow believers by their love and support can minimize the suffering he causes. --- Julie Ackerman Link
Thank You, heavenly Father, for a family of believers
who carry our burdens when we are weak.
Thank you for those who truly
"weep with those who weep." Amen.

No Terror
Read: Psalm 31:9-24
Make Your face shine upon Your servant; save me for Your mercies' sake. --- Psalm 31:16
The Bible In One Year:
Isaiah 1-2
Galatians 5
After the terrorist bombing in Bali in 2002, one man reacted by giving up traveling. Three years later, he finally took his family for a holiday in Bali, together with 50 tourists from Newcastle, Australia. The trip ended in tragedy when his family was caught in a suicide bombing at a cafe on Jimbaran Beach.
From New York to Indonesia, warnings and threats of terrorist attacks continue. Terrorism derives its sting by exporting fear. No one feels safe.
In Psalm 31, David was in the grip of surrounding threats that terrorized both his reputation and his life. He wrote, "Fear is on every side," and said, "They scheme to take away my life" [v.13].
When everything seemed bleakest, David cried in despair, "I trust in You, O LORD" [v.14]. He began to find peace when he acknowledged, "My times are in Your hand" [v.15].
In our world, perfect safety is not possible. But David's God is our God. Though our earthly security may be threatened, we can never lose God's eternal, unfailing love.
To those who trust in the Lord, David wrote these hope-filled words: "[The Lord] shall strengthen your heart" [v.24]. When we place our times in His hand, we can exchange the fear of terror for peace and praise. --- Albert Lee

For The Poor
Read: Deuteronomy 15:7-11
Open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land. --- Deuteronomy 15:11
The Bible In One Year:
Song of Solomon 6-8
Galatians 4
The man sits on the street corner day after day, begging for money. He's poor and desperate for a little cash to spend on food.
He's not alone. More than one-half of the world's people live below the internationally defined poverty line of less than $2.00 a day. Poverty and hunger are such a big problem in our world that it's easy for us to feel helpless or to become hard-hearted and do nothing.
But God doesn't close His eyes to the plight of the poor. When He gave His people guidelines for living, He included instructions on ways to care for the needy [Deut. 15:11]. He told His people, "You shall not harden your heart, nor shut your hand, from your poor brother, [but] open your hand wide to him and willingly lend him sufficient for his need" [vv.7-8].
God also commanded His people not to glean the corners of their fields so that the less fortunate could gather food [Lev. 19:9-10]. And Jesus showed His compassion for the poor by His words and actions.
As Christians, we cannot ignore the plight of the poor today. Individuals and churches can join with Christian organizations working to combat poverty as they spread the Word. God has a heart for the poor. Do we? --- Anne Cetas

Power That Disrupts
Read: Matthew 20:20-28
The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many. --- Matthew 20:28
The Bible In One Year:
Song of Solomon 4-5
Galatians 3
What does it take to disrupt the good work of a church? Just one power-hungry person.
One of my college friends, a pastor, wrote to me about a disruption in his church. People had come to faith in Christ, and membership had quadrupled. The members were active in serving the church and community.
but then one man in a leadership position began to envy the pastor's influence. He felt he deserved more power, so he began to tear down the pastor --- thinking that would increase his own stature. It didn't matter to him what he was doing to God's work; he wanted power and recognition. He caused such an uproar that my friend finally had to resign.
When it comes to serving Christ, we have no right to seek power. We have no calling for prestige. We have no reason to look for self-aggrandizement and recognition. How much better to serve quietly in the background, keeping in mind that Jesus, our example, "did not come to be served, but to serve" [Matt. 20:28].
Are you a pastor? A teacher? A deacon? A missionary? A church member? If you look for power, you may get it, but it will become power that disrupts the good work of your church ministry. --- Dave Branon
Find out what God would have you do,
And do that little well;
For what is great and what is small
The Lord alone can tell. --- Anon.
WE LOSE THE APPROVAL OF GOD WHEN WE SEEK THE APPLAUSE OF MEN.

Finding The Flow
Read: John 7:32-44
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. --- John 7:38
The Bible In One Year:
Song of Solomon 1-3
Galatians 2
While using a computer to edit a video presentation, a colleague and I were greeted one morning by the on-screen error message: UNABLE TO FIND THE FLOW. Whatever the software program meant by those words, it brought to mind the popular saying, "Go with the flow." To some people that means behaving as most other people do without trying to swim against the current of the culture. To others it speaks of being more accepting of circumstances without trying to control everything that happens.
But for followers of the Lord, there's another dimension of going with the flow. Jesus said: "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water" [John 7:37-38]. Christ spoke of the Holy Spirit, who would make Him home in every believer. In a very real sense, when we invite Christ into our lives, the Flow finds us and we find the Flow. From then on, we are recipients and conduits of living water --- the eternal source of thirst-quenching satisfaction for our souls. The indwelling Holy Spirit carries us along by a power and purpose greater than ourselves.
As channels of God's living water, we are free to go with His flow. --- David McCasland
Father, thank You for Your Spirit,
Fill us with His love and power;
Change us into Christ's own image

Mixing-Bowl Musings
Read: Luke 18:18-27
The things which are impossible with men are possible with God. --- Luke 18:27
The Bible In One Year:
Ecclesiastes 10-12
Galatians 1
Countless times I've heard myself say, "I'm going to bake a cake." Then one day I realized that I've never baked a cake in my life --- only my oven can do that. I simply mix the right ingredients and allow the oven to do its part. Through that division of labor, I have the joy of seeing others taste and enjoy delicious cake.
God used my mixing-bowl musings to clarify a dilemma I once had after starting a neighborhood Bible study. It was one thing to bring my neighbors together to study the Bible, but seeing them believe and follow Christ was another. I felt powerless. Suddenly I saw the obvious. Like baking cakes, making Christians was impossible for me, but not for God. I had blended the right ingredients --- an open home, friendship, love. Now I had to trust the Holy Spirit, through His Word, to do His work. When I cooperated with that division of labor, I had the joy of seeing others taste of God's goodness.
In Luke 18:18-27, Jesus so vividly described some hindrances to saving faith that His listeners began to wonder if anyone could be saved. Do you feel that way about someone? Be encouraged by the Lord's strong reminder that there are some things that only God can do. Saving people is one of them. --- Joanie Yoder

The Good And The Bad
Read: Nahum 1
The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble. --- Nahum 1:7
The Bible In One Year:
Ecclesiastes 7-9
2 Corinthians 13
Nineveh was in trouble with God. Big trouble! Despite the good work of the reluctant prophet Jonah, Nineveh had returned to its evil ways. The Ninevites had oppressed other countries, worshiped idols, and performed acts of cruelty.
God saw this evil, and through the words of Nahum He spoke of Nineveh's coming destruction, using words such as wrath and vengeance. Nineveh was about to face judgment.
Why would God's prophet tell the people of Judah about this? How could Nahum's frightening words help those who lived in the Promised Land?
There is help for answering those questions in Nahum 1:7:8. His prophecy of the destruction of those who reject God stands in sharp contrast to God's promise to those "who trust in Him" The godly, rather than facing judgment, would be cared for. They would have a refuge in Him.
God is not one-sided. He provides refuge, help, and comfort for those who trust Him, and He also sends judgment against those who disobey His standards.
The message for us is the same as it was for Judah. Through trust and obedience, we can enjoy the comfort of God's refuge --- even in times of trouble. --- Dave Branon
How oft in the conflict, when pressed by the foe,
I have fled to my Refuge and breathed out my woe;
How often, when trials like sea billows roll,
Have I hidden in Thee, O Thou Rock of my soul. --- Cushing
EVERYONE MUST FACE GOD AS SAVIOR OR AS JUDGE.
The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble. --- Nahum 1:7

Turning Pain Into Praise
Read: 2 Corinthians 1:7-11
As you are partakers of the sufferings, so also you will partake of the consolation. --- 2 Corinthians 1:7
The Bible In One Year:
Ecclesiastes 4-6
2 Corinthians 12
After years of a remarkable and fruitful ministry in India, Amy Carmichael became a bedridden sufferer. As the courageous founder and dynamic heart of the Dohnavur Fellowship, she had been instrumental in rescuing hundreds of girls and boys from a terrible life of sexual servitude.
While she carried on her rescue operation of bringing your people into spiritual freedom through faith in Jesus Christ, she wrote books and poems that are still blessing readers around the world.
Then arthritis made Amy a pain-wrecked invalid. Did she bemoan her affliction or question God? No. Any was still the guiding inspiration of Dohnavur, and she still kept on writing. Her meditations, letters, and poems are filled with praise to God and encouragement to her fellow pilgrims.
When affliction strikes us, how do we react? Are we embittered, or do we trustfully appropriate God's sustaining grace? [2 Cor. 12:9]. And do we prayerfully encourage those around us by our Spirit-enabled cheerfulness, our courage, and our confidence in God?
When we rely on the Lord, He will help us turn pain into praise. --- Vernon Grounds
Can God trust you with sorrow,
With anguish, and with pain,
Or would your faith soon falter
And faint beneath the strain? --- Nicholson

Immortality Breakthrough
Read: Psalm 90
I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. --- John 14:3
The Bible In One Year:
Ecclesiastes 1-3
2 Corinthians 11:16-33
Ray Kurzweil is a remarkable scientist and inventor. In a book he coauthored, titled Fantastic Voyage: Live Long Enough To Live Forever, he contends that science and technology hold the key to immortality. Kurzweil lives on a strict diet enhanced with a regimen of supplements, fully convinced that he will be alive when the immortality breakthrough happens. He is not a crackpot but a respected member of the business community.
In contrast to this optimism about what science can do stands the realism of Moses. "The days of our lives are seventy years; and if by reason of strength they are eighty years, yet their boast is only labor and sorrow" [Ps. 90:10]. At best we live a few decades, and then we are gone like grass in the park.
Far better to trust ourselves to Jesus, who promises to join us to the timeless life of God. He told His disciples, "If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, you may be also" [John 14:3].
Christ's followers live in the assurance that when the sun has burned its last and the stars have tumbled from the sky, we shall be alive. We anticipate a life greater than anything we could imagine in our wildest dreams. --- Haddon Robinson
Jesus said His words will last forever,
Though things of heaven and earth will pass away;
All who trust in Him have life eternal,
And to that glorious life He is the way. --- Hess
THIS LIFE IS BUT THE CHILDHOOD OF OUR IMMORTALITY.
I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. --- John 14:3

Treasure In Heaven
Read: Matthew 6:19-21
Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. --- Matthew 6:21
The Bible In One Year:
Proverbs 30-31
2 Corinthians 11:1-15
On a teaching trip to Togo, West Africa, I noticed hundreds of abandoned buildings that were only partially built. I asked my missionary host why so many structures were incomplete. His response was striking.
Apparently, Togolese law allows an injured party to demand payment from the available cash of family members of the person who injured them. Even distant relatives are not exempt. To prevent their cash savings from being attached to a legal action, people will purchase land instead. Slowly, sometimes over decades, they will build a house on it with any extra cash. The hundreds of unfinished buildings were testimony to how easy it is to lose one's material possessions.
This was certainly part of the reason our Lord taught, "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal" [Matt. 6:19]. Treasure that is of this world is vulnerable to being lost, stolen, destroyed, or devalued. If that is our focus, we will only experience frustration.
If our hearts are drawn instead to the value of the eternal --- godly character, relationships, souls --- we won't be disappointed. We will become rich in the things of Christ. And treasure in heaven can never be taken away! --- Bill Crowder
I do not ask for treasures here
To hoard, decay, and rust,
But for the better things of life ---
Humility and trust. --- Meadows
TREASURES IN HEAVEN ARE LAID UP AS TREASURES ON EARTH ARE LAID DOWN.
Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. --- Matthew 6:21

Scattered!
Read: Acts 8:1-8
Those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the Word. --- Acts 8:4
The Bible In One Year:
Proverbs 27-29
2 Corinthians 10
In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the US Gulf Coast and displaced an estimated 1.3 million households. With cities and towns evacuated, homes destroyed, and jobs gone, people relocated to communities in every state including Alaska and Hawaii. Because Christians are not immune to the storms of life, it's likely that thousands of people who love the Lord found themselves in places they never expected to live.
Yet many of those same people whose hopes and plans were shattered by Katrina would also bring God's love to others across the US. Like the early Christians who were forced out of Jerusalem by persecution, it could be said of them: "Those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the Word" [Acts 8:4].
While none of us would choose this kind of financial loss and disruption, would we see it as an opportunity to share the hope Jesus Christ has given us?
The apostle Peter's letter reminded Christians who had been scattered among the nations to "be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you" [1 Peter 3:15].
If you are uprooted, be sure to scatter the seeds of the gospel wherever you go. --- David McCasland
We're always sowing seeds in life
By everything we do and say,
So let's make sure we sow God's Word
Among the ones we meet each day. --- Hess

"They"
Read: Genesis 17:4-7, 15-19
I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants ... to be God to you. --- Genesis 17:7
The Bible In One Year:
Proverbs 25-16
2 Corinthians 9
A self-employed inventor from Branson, Missouri, decided to change his name to "They." He said he did for fun to address the common reference that people make to "they." He remarked, "People say, 'They do this,' or 'They're to blame for that.' 'They' accomplish such great things. Somebody had to be responsible." When his friends call his home, they ask, "Is They there?" His new name must drive grammarians crazy.
Abram's name was changed, but not on a whim. The Lord changed it. It biblical times, God often changed a person's name to indicate what He was going to do through that person.
Abram's name ["exalted father"] was changed to Abraham ["father of many"] because God had promised to make him a father of many nations [Gen. 17:5] through whom "all the families of the earth shall be blessed" [12:3].
In fulfillment of God's promise, Jesus came from the line of Abraham and blessed the nations by giving His life for our sins. When we believe in Him, we are blessed and are promised eternal life with Him. God now calls us by new names: "My people" and "sons of the living God" [Rom. 9:25-26]. As His people, we can be used by Him to bless others. --- Anne Cetas
Bless me, Lord, and make me a blessing;
I'll gladly your message convey;
Use me to help some poor needy soul,
And make me a blessing today. --- Anon.
GOD GIVES BLESSING TO US SO THAT WE CAN GIVE BLESSING TO OTHERS.

But Prayer
Read: Acts 12:5-17
Constant prayer was offered to God for him by the church. --- Acts 12:5
The Bible In One Year:
Proverbs 22-24
2 Corinthians 8
When I was a pastor, I often visited residents in rest homes. I'll never forget one dear elderly lady I met. She was blind and had been bedridden for 7 years, yet she remained sweet and radiant. One day she told me about a dream she had. She was in a beautiful garden, where the grass was a luxurious carpet beneath her and the fragrance of flowers filled the air.
She dropped to her knees, entranced by the scene. As her thoughts were drawn heavenward, she felt the need to pray for her own pastor, for me, and for others. When she awakened, however, she discovered that she was still in her hospital bed. With a smile she said to me, "You know, Pastor, at first I was a bit disappointed. But in a sense the dream was true. This old bed has been a garden of prayer these 7 years!" Prayer had made her room a holy place of meditation and blessing.
Prayer also made a difference when Peter was in prison [Acts 12]. It isn't always easy to pray, for real intercession takes self-discipline. Many of us lapse into saying fine-sounding words without truly praying. God often drives us to our knees through the press of circumstances, where we are to "seek the LORD and His strength; seek His face evermore" [1 Chron. 16:11]. --- Herb Vander Lugt
There's a beautiful garden of fellowship sweet,
Where our prayers plant the seeds of reward;
And if there we will frequently make our retreat,
We shall gather rich store from the Lord! --- Bosch
GOD AND PRAYER GO TOGETHER; TO NEGLECT ONE IS TO NEGLECT THE OTHER.

For His Eyes Only
Read: Matthew 6:1-8, 16-18
Your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. --- Matthew 6:18
The Bible In One Year:
Proverbs 19-21
2 Corinthians 7
Typically, as we age we lose our prominence and our positions of influence. Even those of us who have never sought the limelight seem increasingly to fade into the shadows.
Obscurity and anonymity are good, however, for it is difficult to perform in public without wondering what impression we're making on others. We fret over the extent that our reputations are being enhanced or damaged. And therein lies our peril: To the degree that we seek human recognition, we forfeit God's approval. On the other hand, to lose the admiration of men and women may turn us to seek God's approval only.
Here is a test for our gifts, our prayers, our fasts: Are they done for God's eyes only? If so, though overlooked and unnoticed by others, we have our Father's acknowledgment and reward.
Three times Jesus repeated to His disciples: "Your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly" [Matt. 6:4, 6, 18]. This is our assurance as well. Every unobserved gift of time, energy, and love; every petition we whisper in our Father's ears; every secret, inward struggle against sin and self-indulgence will be fully rewarded in due time. In the end, His "Well done, good and faithful servant" is all that will matter [Matt. 25:21]. --- David Roper
All service rendered to the Lord
Is sure to gain His rich reward;
And if we work with motives pure,
Our weakest efforts will endure. --- D. De Haan
THERE IS NO REWARD FROM GOD TO THOSE WHO SEEK IT FROM MEN. --- Spurgeon

Coping While Caring
Read: Psalm 46
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. --- Psalm 46:1
The Bible In One Year:
Proverbs 16-18
2 Corinthians 6
A survey titled "Caregiving in the US" estimates that more than 44 million Americans are unpaid caregivers, and a majority of them currently work or have worked while providing care. The survey also found that God, family, and friends were most often cited as sources of strength by people who are caring for others.
Three-fourths of the respondents said they relied on prayer to deal with the demands of caregiving. "Prayer is the best way to refresh yourself," said one person. "I find a quiet place and pray and cry and get relief. Then I can go back into the room calm."
"God is our refuge and strength," wrote the psalmist, "a very present help in trouble" [Ps. 46:1]. Eugene Peterson's vivid paraphrase says: "God is a safe place to hide, ready to help when we need Him."
Through prayer, we can step into the calming presence of the Lord and find strength to go on. As we bring our heartaches and needs to God. He meets us where we are and gives us His peace. He is an ever-present help who cares for us in every situation.
Caregiving is a high calling and a difficult task. But there is strength from the Lord to help us as we care for those who need us. --- David McCasland
I must tell Jesus all of my trials,
I cannot bear these burdens alone,
In my distress He kindly will help me,
He ever loves and cares for His own. --- Hoffman
PRAYER PUTS US IN TOUCH WITH GOD --- OUR GREATEST CAREGIVER.

Change Of Address
Read: 2 Corinthians 5:1-10
I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better. --- Philippians 1:23
The Bible In One Year:
Proverbs 13-15
2 Corinthians 5
Every 26 years or so, we move to a different house.
Actually, Sue and I moved into our first home when our first child was a baby. We had no idea we would live there for 26 years. When we finally did change our residence, it was an emotional time.
On the day we moved, after everything was out of the house, we did one final walk-through to relive the memories. The toughest moment came when we entered Melissa's bedroom. We had said goodbye to her 2 years earlier after a car accident took her earthly life. Now we were bidding adiue to the sunflower-decorated room she loved so much.
As I think of that emotional time when we moved, I am reminded of what a great change of address Melissa enjoyed on the day she was ushered into God's presence. Our move to a different house pales in comparison to the glories our daughter now enjoys in heaven. What a grand comfort to know that our departed loved ones who have trusted in Jesus are now living in God's majestic kingdom! [2 Cor. 5:1].
Are you ready for that ultimate change of address? No matter where you live on this earth, make sure your final home will be heaven. --- Dave Branon
Someday, my Redeemer shall call me to come
And leave all these earth-scenes below;
And take me to be with my loved ones at home ---
I want to be ready to go! --- Huston

Flying Backwards
Read: Psalm 139:7-16
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. --- Psalm 139:14
The Bible In One Year:
Proverbs 10-12
2 Corinthians 4
I had read that hummingbirds can fly backwards, but the cynic in me doubted it. So when my wife mounted a hummingbird feeder by the kitchen window and filled it with sugar water, I sat down with a cup of coffee to see if it was true.
Before long, hummingbirds began to appear --- a ruby-throated male and several females. I soon gave up trying to watch their wings as they flew. All I could see was a blur. I was captivated by the feisty little creatures as they darted up and down, away and back, vying for an open spot at the feeder and chasing one another away.
After a while, only one bird was left --- her long, think beak sucking up the liquid. Then, when she was finished, she flew straight backwards, then up, and finally darted out of sight among the trees.
How did she do it? God knows. Sometime on the fifth day of creation, while He was forming whales, sharks, orioles, and loons, God created the hummingbird with its amazing ability to fly backwards --- a miracle of His power.
I didn't need that awesome illustration to prove the existence and brilliance of God. But it did remind me once again that I have every reason to worship God, for I too am "fearfully and wonderfully made" [Ps. 139:14]. --- Dave Egner

I had read that hummingbirds can fly backwards, but the cynic in me doubted it. So when my wife mounted a hummingbird feeder by the kitchen window and filled it with sugar water, I sat down with a cup of coffee to see if it was true.

Housekeeping Of The Heart
Read: Matthew 23:23-31
You also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy. --- Matthew 23:28
The Bible In One Year:
Proverbs 8-9
2 Corinthians 3
As a young homemaker, I enjoyed cleaning our house from top to bottom. The trouble was, it never stayed clean for long. Eventually I discovered that if I kept our house reasonably tidy, it appeared to be clean even when it wasn't. Gradually I concentrated more on the appearance of a clean house and neglected thorough cleaning. This compromise was not only convenient, it was convincing. Sometimes even I was fooled. But on sunny days my clean-looking house was revealed for what it was --- dusty and dirty.
In Jesus' day, the scribes and Pharisees were hypocrites who concentrated on the appearance of holiness while neglecting their heart-holiness [Matt. 23:25]. When the light of Jesus shined on them, He revealed the truth about their outwardly religious life. He didn't say these external acts were necessarily wrong, but they were wrongfully used as a coverup for wickedness. For them, inner housecleaning was long overdue.
Keeping up appearances in our housework isn't wrong, but pretending our hearts are clean is. Only those who are clean on the inside will welcome Jesus with confidence when He returns. Is your heart ready? Or is heart-cleaning needed? Now is the time to take care of it! --- Joanie Yoder
THINKING IT OVER
What is the only way to get a clean heart? [Titus 3:3-6].
After we have put our faith in Jesus Christ [John 3:16],
how do we keep our heart clean? [1 John 1:9].
AT THE HEART OF HOLINESS IS HOLINESS OF THE HEART.

Failing To Do Right
Read: James 4:13-17
To him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin. --- James 4:17
The Bible In One Year:
Proverbs 6-7
2 Corinthians 2
In his book Eight Men Out, Eliot Asinof records the events surrounding the notorious "Black Sox" scandal of 1919. Eight members of the Chicago White Sox baseball club were accused of taking bribes from gamblers in exchange for intentionally losing the World Series. Although they were never convicted in a court of law, all eight were banned from baseball for life.
But one of those players, Buck Weaver, claimed that he had played to win despite knowing about the conspiracy. Though Weaver's performance on the field supported his contention, baseball commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis ruled that any player who had knowledge of the scandal, yet chose not to stop it, would still be banned. Weaver was not punished for doing wrong, but for failing to do right.
In his letter to the first-century church, James wrote, "To him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin" [4:17]. In a world filled with evil and darkness, followers of Christ have the opportunity to shine their light. That often means we must resist the urge to do nothing.
When faced with the choice between doing good and failing to do anything at all, we must always choose to do what's right. --- Bill Crowder
Heavenly Father, help me to honor You throughout my life by being a light in this dark world.
May it never be said that I failed to do what I knew to be good, just, and right. Amen.
THE ONLY THING NECESSARY FOR THE TRIUMPH OF EVIL IS FOR GOOD MEN TO DO NOTHING. ---- Edmund Burke

Learning To Walk
Read: Hosea 11:1-4
I taught Ephraim to walk, taking them by their arms. --- Hosea 11:3
The Bible In One Year:
Proverbs 3-5
2 Corinthians 1
I remember those days long ago when our children were learning to walk. First they showed their readiness by pulling themselves up and taking a tentative step or two. My wife and I would reach out our hands and encourage them to walk toward us. We held them up by their hands or by the suspenders on their overalls. We praised every effort and encouraged every attempt. We never grew discouraged, nor did we give up until they learned to walk.
So it is with our heavenly Father: He "taught [Israel] to walk" [Hos. 11:3]. He took His children "by their arms" and "drew them with gentle cords, with bands of love" [vv.3-4].
Our heavenly Father stands before us with outstretched arms, encouraging us toward holiness, eager to catch us when we stumble. He picks us up when we fall. He is never discouraged with our progress, nor will He ever give up. The more difficult we find the process, the more care and kindness He expends.
George MacDonald put it this way: "God will help us when we cannot walk, and He will help us when we find it hard to walk, but He cannot help us if we will not walk." Even though you fall, you must try again. Your Father holds you by the hand. --- David Roper
Savior, let me walk beside Thee,
Let me feel my hand in Thine;
Let me know the joy of walking
In Thy strength and not in mine. --- Sidebotham
WE CAN'T RUN THE CHRISTIANS RACE UNTIL WE LEARN TO WALK.

Common Ground
Read: Acts 17:22-31
That I might win those who are without law. --- 1 Corinthians 9:21
The Bible In One Year:
Proverbs 1-2
1 Corinthians 16
Roman emperors are not generally remembered for their wisdom, but there are a few exceptions. One great thinker was Marcus Aurelius, emperor of Rome from AD 161 to 180. Gifted with a brilliant mind, he was one of the great intellectual rulers in Western civilization.
Although he never became a convert to the new faith that would be called Christianity, he displayed remarkable insight. His wisdom reflects the law of God written in the heart of someone who did not have God's Word [Rom. 2:14-15]. For example:
The happiness of your life depends on the quality of your thoughts. You have power over your mind --- not outside events. Your life is what your thoughts make it.
These words sound familiar to Proverbs 23:7, "As [a person] thinks in his heart, so is he." We can learn helpful principles from non-Christians and use their beliefs as common ground for sharing the gospel. When Paul stood on Mars Hill addressing some of the leading intellectuals of his day, he did not belittle their beliefs but established common ground with them and then gave the gospel [Acts 17:26-28].

"There's Heaven"
Read: Revelation 22:1-5
They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. --- Revelation 22:5
The Bible In One Year:
Psalms 148-150
1 Corinthians 15:29-58
When 3-year-old Bree's grandpa suffered heart failure, he was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. A few weeks after the funeral when Bree and her family drove past the hospital, she pointed to it and remarked matter-of-factly, "There's heaven." She knew her grandpa was in heaven. Since he went to the hospital on the day he died, she thought it must be heaven.
Bree's mother wrote, "We adults [have] abstract concepts of a paradise beyond even the invisible stars." Bree's childish view of heaven caused her mom to think of heaven as a real place --- which helped to comfort her.
In Revelation, John gives us a glimpse of what heaven will be like. After being caught up to heaven, he saw "a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal" and "the tree of life" [22:1-2]. And in that place there was no need for "lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light" [v.5].
Words are inadequate to describe heaven, but we know it's a real place for those who have trusted Jesus as their Savior. Jesus assures us, "In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you" [John 14:2]. One day we'll be there and won't need to imagine that place anymore. --- Anne Cetas
I have a home in heaven above,
From sin and sorrow free,
A mansion which eternal love
Designed and formed for me. --- Bennett

Something For Nothing
Read: Isaiah 55:1-7
Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy? --- Isaiah 55:2
The Bible In One Year:
Psalms 146-147
1 Corinthians 15:1-28
During a long layover at an airport, I noticed that one business in the main terminal attracted more people than any other. For hours, a steady stream of customers approached with cash in hand, stood in line, made a purchase, and left quickly. All seemed to know exactly what they wanted.
The thriving business was a lottery sales office. Even though the chance of winning the big powerball jackpot was 1 in 146 million, people seemed compelled to spend something and, in almost every case, get nothing. It seemed to be a vivid picture of our enduring quest for satisfaction and security in material things.
When God questioned His people through the prophet Isaiah, He asked why they spent their money for things that neither nourished nor satisfied them. The Lord invited those who had no resources to "come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.... And let your soul delight itself in abundance. Incline your ear, and come to Me" [Isa. 55:1-3].
God offers to give us what we can't buy --- mercy, pardon, and a changed life infused with His presence. He invites us to "Seek the LORD while He may be found" [v.6].
By God's grace, we can freely receive His something --- for nothing. --- David McCasland
Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace,
Freely bestowed on all who believe!
You that are longing to see His face,
Will you this moment His grace receive? --- Johnston
GOD'S GRACE ACCEPTED IS GOD'S PEACE EXPERIENCED.

A People Company
Read: Ephesians 6:1-9
Be obedient to those who are your masters. --- Ephesians 6:5
The Bible In One Year:
Psalms 143-145
1 Corinthians 14:21-40
My brother worked 42 years for the Herman Miller Furniture Company. At his retirement dinner he said, "This is my company. Where else could a production worker like me participate in the management of the company?" What had instilled this kind of loyalty? In part, it was the leadership of D.J. De Pree, longtime president of the company.
One day a worker in the plant died suddenly. When Mr. De Pree visited his widow, she told him of her husband's poetry and of his witnessing to the night watchman. This impressed De Pree with the value of each of the workers in his plant. From then on, his attitude toward the business changed. "I realized," he said, "that the manufacturer's first priority was to make his product the best he could for the one who would see it; the second was the man in the factory who made it; and the third was the ownership."
This attitude is rooted in Scripture. Christians in labor and in management all work for one Master. Employees must therefore serve with diligence. Management must do the same --- with two additions. They must be fair and just [Col. 4:1] and must not threaten [Eph. 6-9].
Integrity, concern for others, and mutual respect make any company a people company. --- Dennis De Haan
Lord, teach me how to love and work,
So every deed I do
May be to someone in its turn
A service fine and true. --- Anon.
WHEN INTEGRITY AND PEOPLE RATE HIGHER THAN PAY AND PROFITS, EVERYONE PROFITS!

Between Sundays
Read: Colossians 3:22-25
Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men. --- Colossians 3:23
The Bible In One Year:
Psalms 140-142
1 Corinthians 14:1-20
Most Christians are not engaged in professional ministry. They don't preach or sing or work for an evangelistic agency. Their time between Sundays is spent doing jobs that don't seem to have value for the spread of the gospel. Therefore, some believers may view themselves as second-class disciples.
That may have been the way some members of the church in Colosse regarded themselves. Paul addressed an erroneous viewpoint of secular work when he wrote, "Obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, ... in sincerity of heart, fearing God" [Col. 3:22].
You see, if God's purposes in this world are to be fulfilled, we need a structured society with all its indispensable activities. The people we work for are servants of the Lord Jesus Christ. Whether they know it or not, our employers are carrying out God's good purposes. As long as the assigned task is not sinful or unethical, when we serve those who rule over us we are serving the Lord.
So let's view our daily work --- whatever it is --- as an extension of God's work in the world. As we do so, we'll find there is no better place to spread the good news of salvation than right where God has placed us. --- Vernon Grounds
Teach me, my God and King,
In all things Thee to see,
And what I do in anything
To do is as for Thee! --- Herbert

First Things First
Read: Luke 10:38-42
Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. --- Proverbs 4:7
The Bible In One Year:
Psalms 137-139
1 Corinthians 13
During World War II, I served as an orthopedic technician in a hospital in England. One day we were cleaning up after putting casts on fractured limbs when I noticed some co-workers goofing off instead of helping. I didn't hesitate to show my displeasure.
Such incidents are why I usually find myself saying a few words in defense of Martha whenever I preach on Luke 10:38-42. You'll recall that she was "distracted with much serving" [v.40], while her sister Mary did nothing but listen to Jesus.
It's easy for me to see Martha's point of view. In Proverbs, more than a dozen verses rebuke the slothful. And when some first-century Christians quit working and started to freeload off others, Paul laid down the rule: "If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat" [2 Thess. 3:10].
Our approach to work must be balanced. Proverbs 4:7 says, "Wisdom is the principal thing." Martha could have said, "Mary, dinner can wait. I'll join you in listening to Jesus before getting started in the kitchen."
Work is vital. But we should not be so obsessed with it that it crowds our worship and spiritual instruction.
Work hard, but keep first things first. --- Herb Vander Lugt
When I do my work, does Christ shine through
In all I do and say?
As I walk with Him and talk with Him,
Is He my joy each day? --- Fitzhugh
DON'T BE SO BUSY DOING GOOD THAT YOU NEGLECT TO DO WHAT'S RIGHT.
